Through The Smoke
Project Details
Vine Charcoal and Compressed Charcoal
Size: 24" x 18"
For this artwork, we were tasked with creating an image the best utilized the qualities of both vine and compressed charcoal. After a few exercises, I decided that my image needed to have the elements of smoke and wind in order to maximize the materials needed.
Due to my interest and love for tattoos, I chose to depict a traditional Chinese dragon in my image navigating its way through a pile of smoke. This project helped me to better handle the medium as charcoal can be very messy. Through the variations in charcoal deposits, I was able to create sharpness and softness where it is needed, and lead the viewer's eye throughout the image due the interesting composition of the dragon's body, breath, and surrounding smoke.
